Mackey’s Ferry

Week 37

      Mackey’s once had ferry that crossed the Albermarle Sound. I carried traffic (including rail) between Mackey’s and Edenton NC. In 1910, Norfolk and Southern opened the 26664-foot Albemarle Sound Railroad Bridge, the longest continuous railroad bridge in the world. It was removed in 1987. It was a longtime fishing port and logging operations center as well. Her glory gone, her pride remains today.
